Need a harness for winter sports well, youve come to the right place. The Super Couloir is designed for ice climbing, alpine climbing, mountaineering and ski touring; you could even use it for rock climbing but wed probably recommend something a bit more padded for that.
Its light, easy to put on (even when wearing crampons, skis or snowshoes) and has plenty of racking for gear and screws. The diaper pull through leg loops design allows you to put it on without undoing any cumbersome buckles (a task especially difficult with gloves on) or standing into the leg loops.
Weve used supported 44mm webbing on the waistbelt this is surprisingly comfortable on hanging belays, its also low profile so it will fit snugly under your rucsac.
This harness has proved a firm favourite with our team of winter gear testers, which includes top alpinists such as Nick Bullock (see below for his thoughts).
The Super Couloir has always been a favourite of mine. Light, simple, comfortable and functional. The diaper leg loop system is a great feature. Freezing early morning, wrap the belt around your waist, keep the gloves on, keep the crampons on, (its early so youve forgotten to put youre harness on before the crampons!) and clip, job done.
On bivvys, I always unclip the leg loops for comfort while lying, but keep the waist belt fastened for safety, brilliant. Quite convenient as well when the call of nature needs to be answered on a multi day climb. All in all, a great well-thought-out harness, no frills, no messing. It does the job.
